How to Remove Sludge from a Radiator?


Sludge is a common issue found in radiators that are formed when tiny particles of dirt mix with dust. Sludge can block the flow of your central heating if it isn’t taken care of. What do You Need to Remove the Sludge?
You will need some equipment when removing the radiator from the sludge including:
1. Old sheets and towels
2. Radiator key
3. Adjustable wrenches
4. A bucket
5. PTFE tape
6. A hose

A Step by Step Guide on How to Remove the Sludge

Step 1:Turn the heating down and wait for the radiator to cool down.

Step 2:Lay the towels and sheets below your radiator to catch any sludge that will fall from your radiator. You should also make sure to cover the space around and under valves.

Step 3:Turn off the thermostatic valve. Then move to the other side of the radiator and take the plastic cap off the valve. This is the lockshield valve.

Step 4:Turn the lockshield valve full clockwise and count the number of turns it takes. You can use a wrench for this.

Step 5:Loosen the nut that joins the radiator to the valve.

Step 6:Place a bucket under the valve you just opened. Open the bleed valve using the radiator key.
Step 7:Loosen the lockshield valve the same way any extra liquid out.

Step 8:Close the bleed valve.

Step 9:Disconnect the radiator and take it somewhere where you can hose it down be it a garden, somewhere outside or a bathtub.

Step 10:Hose the radiator to remove any sludge.

Step 11: Reconnect the radiator and your radiator will be as good as new.
