How to look after your heating system during this summer?

Summer is just around the corner and you probably have a few things around your house that you use only in winter. With the rise in temperatures, you don’t need a heating system to warm up your home. However, you should keep your radiators and heating system in top condition to ensure they’re functioning properly. That way you can ensure that you get proper warmth during winter and you don’t need to spend money later. Here are a few tips from Radiator Hut on how to look after your heating system during summer:

1.       Service the Boiler
To avoid any risks of carbon monoxide poisoning or house fires, your boiler requires an annual service. Regardless of your type of boiler (gas, coal, wood, heating oil…), checking, cleaning and configuring your heating system during summer properly allows you to save energy while limiting greenhouse gas emissions. With fewer demands for annual boiler service by professionals in the summer compared to the winter season, take advantage of the summer to carry out a complete service of your boiler.

2.       Bleed the Radiator
Radiators can become less efficient over time due to dust and air accumulation in the pipes. To avoid having a noisy heater which partially heats, it is recommended to dust and bleed your radiators at least once a year, especially during summer.  In conclusion, you will avoid overconsumption, heat will spread more efficiently in the interior and you will extend the life of your radiators.

3.       Turn Off the Boiler
Switching off your boiler completely can be a great way to save money over the summer if you can do it, especially if you have an older boiler with a continuously burning pilot light. If you have an electric shower that heats the water and won’t be taking baths during the summer months, switching off your boiler won’t affect your bathing routine, though the water at the washbasin would not be heated.

4.       Turn Off Central Heating/Radiators
If you want hot water at your kitchen sink or bathroom basin, you could consider changing your boiler settings to only provide hot water and not heating. This way, you will still get hot water throughout the house, but your radiators won’t come on, keeping your house cool but ensuring hot water where you need it, such as for washing up. You could also leave your central heating on, but turn off each of your radiators individually.

5.       Replace the Boiler
Summer is the perfect time to replace your boiler with a new one. Not only are you less likely to need the boiler while it is being replaced but there will be less demand for plumbers and boiler technicians during this period, allowing you to get the replacement done quickly. Modern boilers are more reliable and cheaper to run than older models.
